Low-ABV drinks are worth making, but do not begin by merely cutting a spirit pour. A lower-strength base makes both alcohol and flavor easier to control.
Measure what went into the glass
A tall drink packed with ice and bubbles can still carry substantial alcohol.
Forty-five milliliters (1.5 oz) of 40% gin contains 18 ml of pure alcohol. Add 135 ml (4.5 oz) tonic and the 180 ml drink is about 10% ABV before ice dilution. It tastes refreshing, but it is not beer-strength.
Sixty milliliters (2 oz) of 12% dry white wine contains 7.2 ml of pure alcohol. Add 120 ml (4 oz) plain sparkling water and the same 180 ml volume is about 4% ABV before ice dilution. The main difference comes from the base, not the bubbles.
Water lowers concentration; it does not remove the alcohol already poured. Check the label, then check the measure.
Make a 1:2 white wine spritzer first
You do not need a specialist low-alcohol bottle. An everyday dry white wine and plain sparkling water are enough.
Fill a highball or wine glass with ice. Add 60 ml (2 oz) chilled wine, then pour 120 ml (4 oz) freshly opened sparkling water down the side. Lift once gently from the bottom and finish with lemon peel.
The drink is cooler and lighter than straight wine while keeping fruit and acidity. Start without syrup.
Why not just halve the spirit?
You can reduce a spirit pour, but two problems remain.
First, the finished drink may still be stronger than expected. Thirty milliliters (1 oz) of 40% spirit in a 180 ml drink is about 6.7% ABV before ice dilution.
Second, flavor can disappear before the drink becomes genuinely light. Adding syrup or juice restores sweetness, not the missing structure, and it does not reduce the alcohol already in the glass.
If spirits are all you have, make a smaller pour. If you want a repeatable low-ABV long drink, changing the base is usually easier.
No/low is not one market signal
No-alcohol and low-alcohol products are often discussed together, but they solve different jobs.
An IWSR article published in 2026 cites its 2025 strategic-study projection of 9% volume growth for no-alcohol and a 2% decline for low-alcohol in 2025. The figures have a defined market scope and should not be generalized worldwide. They do show why “no/low is booming” is too broad a claim.
The useful change for home drinkers is simply more choice. Choose zero alcohol when alcohol must be avoided; choose a wine spritzer, shandy, or another low-ABV long drink when you want to retain some alcohol flavor at a lower concentration.
Change one thing next time
Too thin? Raise the wine from 60 to 75 ml (2 to 2.5 oz) and keep the sparkling water at 120 ml.
Flat? Chill the mixer, open it just before pouring, and stir once.
Too sweet? Confirm that you used plain sparkling water rather than tonic or lemon soda.

- It tastes light but you are unsure about alcohol: use label ABV and pour size instead of taste.
How to apply it at home
- No white wine: mix 150 ml (5 oz) of 4% pale beer with 150 ml (5 oz) lemon soda for roughly 2% ABV; it will be sweeter and closer to a shandy.
- Need zero alcohol: do not keep diluting this drink; choose a zero-proof spritz or sparkling tea instead.
- No sparkling water: still water lowers concentration but tastes flatter. Tonic is not neutral; it adds sweetness and bitterness.
